Abstract
The main constraint in ruminant livestock production is the limited availability of high-quality forage. Odot grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) offers high productivity, but its nutritional value needs improvement through proper fertilization. Goat feces fertilizer is a viable option, but its coarse texture slows natural decomposition, requiring a bioactivator like Biofad to accelerate nutrient release. This study aimed to determine the effects of using different levels of Biofad bioactivator in goat feces fertilizer on the crude protein and crude fiber content of Odot grass, and to identify the most optimal dosage.
This experimental study applied a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications: P0 (control/0% Biofad), P1 (0.025% Biofad), P2 (0.050% Biofad), and P3 (0.075% Biofad). The procedure included composting the goat feces for 45 days, growing the grass in polybags containing a soil, fertilizer, and husk mixture (3:2:1), and harvesting at 50–60 days. Dried and ground grass samples were analyzed using the Kjeldahl method for crude protein and the gravimetric method for crude fiber. Data were processed using ANOVA and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
The results showed that different levels of Biofad bioactivator significantly affected (P<0.05) both the crude protein and crude fiber content of Odot grass. Treatment P1 (0.025% Biofad) yielded the best results, producing the highest crude protein content at 24.80% and the lowest crude fiber content at 29.14%. This optimal dosage provided readily absorbable nitrogen that accelerated vegetative growth, making the plant tissue more succulent and effectively delaying the lignification process in the Odot grass.
