IMPROVING STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION AND SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) METHOD AT MI MA’ARIF NU JIPANG

This research aimed to improve students’ participation and speaking skills through the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) involving fifth-grade students at MI Ma’arif NU Jipang. Preliminary observation revealed that students’ participation in English learning was low, reaching only 20%, and their speaking skills still required improvement. The research was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used were observation sheets, tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed by calculating the percentage of students’ participation and the average score of students’ speaking skills in each cycle to determine whether the success criteria were achieved. The findings showed improvements in both variables. Students’ participation increased from 58% in Cycle I to 64.6% in Cycle II, while the average speaking score improved from 61 to 67.5. These results met the success criteria of 60% for participation and 65 for speaking skills. Therefore, the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method effectively improved students’ participation and speaking skills.
