Abstract

This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using document analysis to find result the Speaking Partner Basic 01 textbook used in the Speaking Partner Club program in Kampung Inggris Pare for beginner learners at the A1 level. The analysis was based on Cunningsworth’s (1995) Coursebook Framework. Impressionistic analysis was used to examine the general appearance and initial suitability of the textbook, including the cover, content design, learning activities, book organization, layout, and visuals. Meanwhile, in-depth analysis was conducted to evaluate the pedagogical and linguistic quality of the textbook through six aspects: aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, language skills, topics and cultural content, and methodology. The impressionistic analysis shows that the textbook has a professional appearance, varied content design, and learning activities that support speaking practice, with good category The in-depth analysis shows that the aspects of objectives and approach, design and organization, language skills, methodology, and topics fully meet the criteria of the framework (scores 83–100%), while language content partially meets the criteria (3/5, 60%) due to limitations in pronunciation materials and explanation style/appropriacy.In conclusion, the Speaking Partner Basic 01 textbook demonstrates varying degrees of alignment with the Cunningsworth (1995) framework: most aspects conform well to the framework, while language content shows partial conformity. These findings can inform instructors and material developers regarding the strengths and areas for further adaptation in non-formal English learning context. The resut shows that Speaking Partner Basic 01 is a good and practical speaking textbook for beginner learners in a non-formal course.
